India's Rising Dominance in Global Defense Markets
India's indigenous defense sector has achieved a remarkable milestone on the international stage. Advanced weapon systems manufactured domestically are increasingly becoming a vital part of defense requirements for numerous nations worldwide. The global defense forums are resonating with the prowess of Indian technological capabilities, spearheaded by the unprecedented demand for India's missile systems.
Defense ministry officials highlight that India's defense exports are no longer confined to conventional weapons; they have firmly established a niche in high-tech strategic weaponry. Initiatives like Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat have supercharged domestic manufacturing, prompting countries worldwide to look at Indian defense systems to secure their borders.
BrahMos Missile Exports Surpass Major Milestones
India's formidable supersonic cruise missile, BrahMos, is witnessing soaring international popularity. Defense Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh recently revealed that cumulative BrahMos exports are on the verge of crossing the $600 million mark. Solid contracts and agreements have been finalized to supply this advanced weapon system to three Southeast Asian nations: the Philippines, Indonesia, and Vietnam.
The deal with the Philippines stands at approximately $330 million, with deliveries already underway. Additionally, substantial defense pacts worth millions have been concluded with Vietnam and Indonesia. The defense secretary also confirmed that the air-launched variant of the missile is fully operational and has successfully demonstrated its capabilities when integrated with Su-30 MKI fighter jets.
Akash Missile Gains Traction in Central Asia
Following the tremendous success of BrahMos, India's indigenous short-range surface-to-air missile system, 'Akash', has also carved out a strong position in global markets. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and manufactured by public sector undertakings, the production lines for Akash have stabilized, ensuring timely fulfillment of international orders.
After Armenia became the first international customer to procure the system in 2022, other Central Asian nations have expressed profound interest. Deliveries to Armenia commenced in 2024, and Tajikistan and Turkmenistan have now joined the roster as export destinations for the lethal Akash missile system.
French Commander Praises Indigenous Tejas Fighter
While Indian missiles are making waves globally, India's homegrown light combat aircraft, 'Tejas', has won accolades from foreign defense experts. Participating in the Indian Air Force's multilateral exercise 'Tarang Shakti' in Jodhpur, French Air Defence Deputy Commander Julien Sabene showered high praise on the Tejas.
"Flying in the Tejas reminded me of our legacy Mirage 2000 aircraft. The synergy between Rafale and Tejas in the skies is truly remarkable, and it represents a massive leap forward for Indian capability and sovereignty." — Julien Sabene, Deputy Commander, French Air Defence
A Leap Toward Global Defense Superpower Status
What began as an initiative to achieve domestic self-reliance has blossomed into a robust engine for global defense exports. Defense analysts predict that India's export figures will scale even greater heights in the coming years, positioning the nation as a reliable and cost-effective security partner for friendly nations across the globe.
