The national capital is witnessing a massive political showdown over sexual harassment allegations originating from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified its offensive against the grand old party, with women MPs scheduled to travel in buses from the party headquarters to Rashtrapati Bhavan to meet President Droupadi Murmu regarding the matter.
From University Campus to National Politics
The controversy centers around Congress MP and former JNU professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, who faces severe allegations brought forward by university students. Following an internal inquiry committee's recommendations, JNU had issued an order on October 9 removing Akoijam from service with immediate effect. Subsequently, Delhi Police registered an FIR against him on October 11. However, the accused MP has vehemently denied all allegations, dismissing them as an orchestrated campaign to damage his reputation.
Intense Protests Outside Congress Headquarters
The political friction spilled onto the streets when the BJP Mahila Morcha staged a fierce protest outside the Congress headquarters in New Delhi, demanding immediate legal action and answers from the party leadership. The demonstration led to heavy police deployment and the brief detention of several women protesters.
BJP Pushes Women Safety Agenda
By framing the controversy around women's safety and accountability, the ruling party aims to corner the opposition. All eyes are now set on the delegation's meeting with the President to see what formal representations and actions are sought regarding this high-stakes political row.
