The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has taken a major step to tighten regulations regarding the production, packaging, and sale of spices across the state. Authorities have instructed traders and businesses to sell spice powders and mixed spices only in properly packed and sealed forms, putting an immediate halt to the sale of loose or unpacked spices.
Strict Guidelines for All Food Businesses
Food Safety Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe issued these stringent directives covering various segments of the food supply chain. The new norms apply to manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, e-commerce platforms, hotels, restaurants, caterers, and institutional kitchens alike, ensuring comprehensive compliance with food safety standards.
Complete Ban on Ethylene Oxide
In addition to packaging rules, the FDA has imposed a total ban on the use of ethylene oxide for sterilizing spices. This decisive action aims to curb adulteration and eliminate potential health hazards associated with chemical residues in daily food items, reinforcing consumer safety across the state.
