Maruti Suzuki Revolutionizes Fuel Efficiency with CNG Automatics
In response to soaring fuel expenses and heavy urban traffic conditions, Maruti Suzuki has rolled out a much-awaited powertrain combination across three of its most successful hatchbacks and compact sedans. By integrating factory-fitted CNG kits with Automated Manual Transmissions (AMT) in the Swift, Dzire, and Baleno, the company has successfully eliminated the traditional dilemma car buyers faced between fuel economy and driving convenience in congested city commutes.
This strategic move makes Maruti Suzuki the second automobile manufacturer in India to offer automatic transmission alongside eco-friendly CNG fuel options. Designed specifically for daily commuters and cost-conscious family buyers, these new variants aim to deliver effortless clutch-free driving without compromising on low running expenses, which have traditionally been the primary selling point for compressed natural gas vehicles.
Pricing and Variant Breakdown Across Models
Pricing remains a critical factor for Indian consumers, and Maruti has positioned these variants competitively. The sporty Maruti Swift CNG AMT starts at an ex-showroom price of ₹7.92 lakh. Meanwhile, the newly redesigned Maruti Dzire CNG AMT is priced from ₹8.53 lakh, leveraging its recent safety and design upgrades. The premium hatchback, Maruti Baleno CNG AMT, comes in at ₹8.32 lakh.
These models are thoughtfully distributed across popular trims. The Swift is offered in VXi, VXi(O), and ZXi variants, while the Dzire is available in VXi and ZXi trims. The Baleno CNG AMT can be purchased through Nexa dealerships in Delta and Zeta trims, giving customers ample choices based on their individual feature preferences and budgets.
Performance, Engine Specs, and Claimed Mileage
Under the hood, all three models feature a robust 1.2-litre, three-cylinder Z12E petrol engine. Operating in CNG mode, the power plant generates 70 bhp of power and 102 Nm of torque, channeled through a responsive 5-speed AMT gearbox to the front wheels. Despite the automated gear shifts, the fuel efficiency figures remain exceptionally high.
Official certified figures indicate that the Swift CNG AMT delivers 35.34 km/kg, while the Baleno delivers 34.47 km/kg. Standing out at the top, the Dzire CNG AMT claims an impressive mileage of 36.47 km/kg. This high level of efficiency ensures that long journeys remain extremely gentle on the owner's finances.
Minimal Running Cost and Boot Space Practicality
Calculating based on current metropolitan CNG rates of approximately ₹87 per kilogram, the running cost for the Dzire CNG AMT boils down to a remarkably low ₹2.5 per kilometer. This makes operating a spacious family sedan cheaper than many commuter motorcycles while providing unmatched safety and climate control comfort.
Furthermore, Maruti has addressed traditional storage concerns by optimizing the integration of the 55-litre water-equivalent CNG cylinders within the luggage compartments of the Swift and Dzire without entirely sacrificing everyday utility. The Baleno similarly retains a generous 318-litre boot space, ensuring practical usability alongside extreme economic benefits.
