Mecca Defense Pact Activated After Houthi Attacks: Turkish and Pakistani Troops to Deploy in Saudi Arabia

The security landscape in the Middle East is undergoing a major transformation. Following a series of coordinated missile attacks by Houthi rebels in Saudi Arabia, the 'Mecca Defense Pact' agreed upon two months ago has now officially been activated. Following an emergency meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan have collectively decided to rapidly deploy joint military forces within Saudi territory.

Escalating Tensions and Pact Activation

This decisive move comes in the wake of Houthi strikes targeting vital infrastructure, including the Madinah power station, King Khalid Airport in Riyadh, Aramco refineries, and the Khamis Mushait airbase. In response to these escalating threats, the mutual defense agreement originally signed on August 7, 2026, in Mecca by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has now taken full effect.

Under the terms of the collective defense commitment, an attack on any one of the member nations is treated as an attack on all three. The Pakistani Foreign Ministry officially confirmed the deployment of troops following joint ministerial statements highlighting the urgent need for unified regional defense.

Leadership and Strategic Implications

Saudi Defense Minister Khalid bin Salman announced the operationalization of the alliance on social media, emphasizing complete solidarity against threats targeting Mecca and holy sites. To streamline operations, retired Pakistani Lieutenant General Noman Mahmood has been appointed as the alliance's first Secretary-General.

Strategic analysts note that the formal alignment of Turkey—possessing NATO's second-largest military—and Pakistan, the only nuclear-armed Islamic nation, with Saudi Arabia introduces a powerful new dynamic to the ongoing conflict in Yemen and security in the Red Sea corridor.
