The long struggle and years of uncertainty for hundreds of displaced families finally came to an end as 319 individuals who came to India from neighboring Pakistan were officially granted Indian citizenship. A special ceremony was organized at a prominent auditorium in Rajkot, Gujarat, where these families were handed their much-awaited citizenship certificates, legalizing their status as full citizens of India.
An Emotional Milestone and New Beginnings
The atmosphere during the event was deeply emotional, with tears of joy welling up in the eyes of many beneficiaries as their Indian citizenship was formally announced. Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi attended the ceremony as the chief minister and personally handed over the certificates. Congratulating the families, he remarked that starting today, they are proud citizens of India, attributing this historic development to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
Highlighting the hardships faced by minority Hindu families in Pakistan, Sanghvi noted how women, in particular, had to endure severe restrictions and insecurity. He shared that many families from regions like Tharparkar in Pakistan had to change their names just to ensure their basic safety. With Indian citizenship now secured, these individuals can finally live a life of dignity, freedom, and true identity without fear.
Distribution and Empowerment
Among the 319 people who received citizenship certificates, 259 are from Rajkot district, 53 from Morbi, 6 from Kutch, and one individual is from Surendranagar district. This official recognition provides these families with a solid legal foundation to rebuild their lives securely within the country.
Access to Fundamental Rights
For families that spent years hoping for permanent identity and legal security in India, the day brought immense relief and happiness. Beneficiaries expressed that their long-standing dream has finally materialized. With official citizenship now in hand, they will be able to obtain Aadhaar cards, voter IDs, participate in upcoming democratic elections, and access bank loans to purchase homes and establish stable livelihoods.
