The Bhagwant Mann government in Punjab has intensified its aggressive campaign against violators of anti-drug laws, with the Food and Drugs Administration's drug wing conducting extensive inspections across the state. The drive focuses heavily on safeguarding public health and ensuring strict adherence to drug regulations.
Strict Enforcement: Seizures and License Suspensions
According to official data, the drug wing conducted thousands of inspections, resulting in the seizure of drugs worth Rs 20.64 crore from 214 licensed and unlicensed firms for violating the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and Drugs Rules. Furthermore, authorities suspended the licenses of 520 chemists and outright canceled 22 licenses for severe regulatory breaches.
Under the directions of Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Balbir Singh, regular inspections are being carried out to curb the misuse of pharmaceutical drugs. Dozens of court cases have been registered, resulting in convictions and penalties, while hundreds of cases remain pending in district courts across the state.
Tackling Online Sales and New Drug Schedules
In a major step towards curbing substance abuse, the central government has included 'Pregabalin' in Schedule H1 of the Drugs Rules, following continuous persuasion by the Punjab government. However, state authorities have also flagged concerns regarding the unregulated online sale of prescription drugs via e-pharmacies, which continues to pose a challenge to effective law enforcement.
