The political landscape in Rajasthan is witnessing intense activity as the process to elect local governments in urban areas reaches its final and decisive stage. Voting to elect mayors, chairpersons, and presidents in 305 urban local bodies across the state is taking place today. Both the ruling party and the opposition have put in massive efforts to secure control over crucial municipal boards.
Political analysts view these local body elections as a significant precursor to upcoming broader political trends. Top leadership from both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress party are closely monitoring the developments. Ahead of today's voting, results in 32 urban bodies had already been finalized as candidates secured victory unopposed. According to the state election department, the BJP has gained an early advantage with multiple uncontested wins, while a few seats have also gone to Congress and independent candidates. In prominent districts like Bharatpur and Bhilwara, BJP female mayor candidates have already been elected without opposition.
Meanwhile, elections in specific major municipal corporations including Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Kota, alongside a few wards in Suket municipality, have been rescheduled to September 25 due to the necessity of repolling in certain wards. Consequently, voting for the chairperson posts is actively taking place in the remaining 273 urban bodies today.
High-Stakes Battles in Key Cities
Several major municipal corporations, including Udaipur, Bikaner, Alwar, Pali, and Ajmer, are witnessing fierce electoral contests. In Udaipur, the BJP holds a comfortable numerical advantage with 53 councilors, compared to Congress's 23 and 4 others. The direct contest between BJP's Paras Singhvi and Congress's Dr. Poonam Kanwar has drawn considerable local attention.
Conversely, Bikaner presents a contrasting arithmetic where Congress holds 42 councilors against BJP's 24. Independent candidates are playing a decisive role across multiple districts, making horse-trading concerns and strategic alliances critical for both major political outfits.
