Governments allocate massive budgets to connect remote rural areas and accelerate development, but ground realities often expose severe discrepancies. A prime example has emerged from a newly constructed rural road built at a cost of over two million rupees, which has started deteriorating just months after its inauguration. The situation is so dire that local villagers were filmed easily peeling off the asphalt layer with their bare hands, exposing a glaring lack of quality control.
This project falls under the Pradhan Mantri Janman Yojana, designed to strengthen basic infrastructure in underserved regions. The stretch connecting Chimra main road to Barbhanwar Middle School was intended to provide seamless connectivity for daily commuters and school children. However, compromised construction standards and alleged negligence by the executing agency have put the entire project under the scanner.
Viral video captures villagers peeling off asphalt
The extent of alleged corruption came to light when a video surfaced online showing local residents stripping away the upper surface of the newly laid road as if it were a carpet. The footage clearly demonstrates that the bituminous layer lacks structural integrity, requiring no heavy machinery or specialized tools to break apart—ordinary residents easily pulled it apart with minimal effort.
The viral clip has triggered widespread public anger. Residents claim they were shocked to witness the fragile state of a road that was supposed to last for years. They allege that the contractor bypassed essential compaction procedures and used substandard materials during execution, leading to the premature breakdown of the infrastructure.
Authorities defend work amid public outcry
Following the massive traction gained by the video on social media, officials from the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) rushed to the site to conduct core-cutting and laboratory tests. Inspections were carried out at specific road chainages to verify the depth and composition of the materials used.
Executive engineers and department officials claimed that initial laboratory findings aligned with prescribed technical standards. They stated that the base course, emulsion, and bitumen quantities met regulatory requirements. Furthermore, authorities suggested that a specific section of the road might have been intentionally damaged using sharp instruments to malign the department's reputation.
