The Bombay High Court has expressed strong observations during the hearing of the NIA's petition seeking cancellation of bail for dismissed police officer Sachin Waze in the Antilia bomb scare case. During the proceedings, when details of the expensive luxury cars used by Waze were presented before the court, the bench of judges was left startled.
From BMW to Land Cruiser: A Fleet of Five Cars
The case was being heard by a bench comprising Justice G.S. Kulkarni and Justice Dr. Neela Gokhale. Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh, appearing for the NIA, read out statements of witnesses recorded during the investigation. A list containing five high-end vehicles used by Waze was placed before the court, which included a white BMW, a black Volvo, a white Mercedes, a white Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, and a black Mercedes.
After reviewing the list, the court expressed surprise, remarking, 'He has 5 cars!' The NIA counsel stated that statements from car dealers who sold these vehicles to Waze were also recorded during the probe.
Court Questions Waze's Lifestyle vs. Salary
The court pointed out that it is unusual for an Assistant Police Inspector-level officer to drive around in luxury vehicles like a Mercedes, noting that even senior officials like Inspectors General or Commissioners might not possess such cars. The court emphasized that the police commissioner should also take note of such matters.
Furthermore, discussions touched upon Waze staying at a five-star hotel in South Mumbai for nearly 100 days despite drawing a monthly salary of around Rs 90,000. The court noted that evaluating such financial aspects and lifestyle choices is crucial to understanding the gravity of the allegations against him.
