The mass migration of youth from Punjab to foreign countries has emerged as one of the state's biggest challenges. A critical question persists: is Punjab failing to provide its youth with quality education, robust skills, and adequate employment opportunities to retain them? This pressing issue took center stage at the 'Panchayat Aaj Tak Punjab' session titled 'Education in Punjab, Earning in Punjab', featuring BJP Rajya Sabha MP Vikramjit Singh Sahni and Rajya Sabha MP-cum-Chandigarh University Chancellor Satnam Singh Sandhu.
Industrial Decline and Scarcity of Employment
Expressing deep concern over the exodus, Vikramjit Singh Sahni noted that while earlier generations of Punjabis traveled abroad to explore broader horizons and fulfill global aspirations, today's youth are forced to leave due to a total lack of domestic opportunities. He pointed out that Punjab, once a leader in per capita income, now struggles with limited career choices.
Sahni attributed this crisis to a decline in state investments and industrial slowdown, citing historical hubs like Amritsar's woollen industry and Jalandhar's sports goods manufacturing which have either weakened or shifted elsewhere. He stressed the urgent need for ground-level industrial revival and better implementation of apprenticeship programs to bridge the gap between education and practical employment.
Strong Educational Infrastructure vs. Fear of Drugs and Crime
Meanwhile, Satnam Singh Sandhu highlighted Punjab's robust higher education ecosystem, boasting around 40 universities and numerous institutions that attract international students. However, he addressed the changing psychological drivers behind migration.
Sandhu remarked that while global mobility has always been part of the Punjabi ethos, the motivation has shifted from mere aspiration to sheer desperation. He candidly admitted that many families now send their children abroad simply out of fear that they might fall prey to drugs or local crime if they stay back in Punjab. Both leaders concluded that systemic reforms in education, skill development, and law enforcement are imperative to secure the future of Punjab's youth at home.
