A massive political controversy has erupted over the sexual harassment allegations against Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). Stepping up pressure, a delegation of BJP women MPs met President Droupadi Murmu and submitted a memorandum demanding the immediate suspension of the MP's Lok Sabha membership and strict protection for the complainant students.
Delegation Meets President Murmu
Led by senior BJP MPs, the delegation—including women MPs from various regions—appealed to the President to ensure an independent and swift legal inquiry without any political interference. They also urged that the matter be brought to the attention of the Lok Sabha Speaker and referred to the Ethics Committee for a thorough examination of the lawmaker's conduct.
The JNU administration had earlier dismissed Akoijam from his position as a professor following an internal inquiry committee finding him guilty of the charges. BJP leaders slammed the top Congress leadership, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, for maintaining absolute silence on the sensitive issue concerning women's safety and dignity.
Police Complaint Filed Over Protest Clashes
Meanwhile, a BJP delegation also filed a formal police complaint regarding alleged misbehavior by Congress workers during a protest outside the AICC headquarters. The delegation submitted video evidence to the police authorities, demanding strict disciplinary and legal action against those involved.
