A massive political controversy has erupted in the national capital following strict police action during a tricolor march, where around 150 protesters were detained. The march was organized to protest against alleged discrepancies in the special intensive revision of voter lists, targeting Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The sweeping crackdown has drawn sharp reactions from top opposition leaders.
Viral social media videos capturing the detention of key student activists like Abhijeet Dipke and Neha Bora have further fueled public outrage. Leaders across the political spectrum have criticized the administration for allegedly trying to muzzle democratic voices and suppress peaceful dissent in the country.
Kejriwal and Opposition Leaders Condemn the Crackdown
Aam Aadmi Party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal slammed the police action, questioning whether citizens should go to Pakistan to wave the Indian national flag if they cannot do so in their own country. He remarked that those who have a problem with the tricolor should pack their bags and leave for Pakistan. His fiery comments have triggered a nationwide debate online.
Meanwhile, former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee termed Abhijeet Dipke's detention as an 'undeclared Emergency', stating that attempts are being made to intimidate the youth. DMK leader MK Stalin also questioned the authorities regarding the whereabouts of the detained activists, calling the move blatantly illegal and demanding their immediate release.
Section 163 Imposed Amid Tight Security
In anticipation of the protests, authorities imposed restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in the New Delhi district. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) also kept Central Park in Connaught Place closed citing administrative reasons. Despite these security measures, protesters gathered to voice their grievances against the poll panel.
Political analysts note that the incident has reignited debates over the freedom of expression and the space for peaceful opposition in contemporary Indian politics. Left leaders have warned that the movement will only intensify if the government continues to rely on detentions to silence critics.
