Ladakh Push for Statehood Gains Momentum
The demand to grant full statehood to Ladakh has once again taken center stage in national politics. Following inconclusive discussions between the central government and representative organizations from Ladakh, local bodies have signaled an escalation in their agitation. The Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) have expressed deep disappointment over the lack of concrete progress during the Home Ministry sub-committee meetings.
Sonam Wangchuk Announces Padyatra
In response to the stalled talks, noted environmentalist and educator Sonam Wangchuk announced a special march on September 23 and 24. While the march was originally planned as a six-day event, severe weather conditions and dropping temperatures in the high-altitude region led to a revision in the schedule, turning it into a symbolic 20-kilometer march followed by a martyrs' day event.

Understanding Statehood and the Sixth Schedule
A full statehood grants a region an elected legislative assembly, a chief minister, and the power to enact local laws and make crucial administrative decisions independently. Along with statehood, Ladakh's leadership is fiercely demanding constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule to protect their land, culture, and unique identity from external pressures.
