While the adoption of electric two-wheelers and passenger vehicles is accelerating rapidly in the Indian market, traditional fuels continue to dominate the agricultural sector. Diesel tractors remain the backbone of farming, and while a few electric tractors have entered the market, their widespread adoption is still in its infancy due to various barriers.
Key Findings from the ICCT Pilot Study
A recent report released by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) following an 11-month pilot study sheds new light on the efficiency of electric tractors. The study evaluated five electric tractors from four different manufacturers across various farming tasks, including tillage, sowing, crop residue management, and transport operations.
According to the findings, electric tractors can perform one acre of farming work with 64 to 84 percent less energy consumption compared to conventional diesel tractors. The ICCT noted that this pilot serves as a crucial first step in gathering real-world data regarding the deployment of electric tractors under actual Indian farming conditions.
Policy Recommendations and Future Outlook
Diesel tractors are frequently deployed for industrial and commercial logistics as well, contributing to air pollution in urban and rural regions alike. The ICCT has recommended expanding subsidy frameworks to include commercial-use electric tractors. Furthermore, the organization advocates for the integration of electric tractors into municipal waste management operations and airport ground logistics.
To fast-track this transition, the study suggests expediting the inclusion of certified electric tractor models into the government's approved agricultural machinery list. Strengthening charging infrastructure through dedicated charging networks, battery swapping, and fast-charging pilot projects has also been highlighted as essential for long-term success.
