Delivering mail in the rugged mountains of Himachal Pradesh is set to become significantly faster and more efficient. In regions where postal workers traditionally navigate winding roads and challenging terrains to reach remote villages, India Post is now deploying advanced drone technology. The department has drawn up a comprehensive plan to operate drone-based deliveries across 110 routes in the state, with services already active on 36 of these paths.
Turning Hours of Travel into Minutes
Many villages in the state are tucked away deep inside valleys and hills, making traditional postal delivery time-consuming. Drones bypass geographical barriers by flying directly through the air from one post office to another, drastically cutting down transit times.
According to postal department officials, this initiative aims to fast-track correspondence and parcels to remote areas, ensuring reliable and swift service delivery despite challenging landscapes.
A Historic Beginning with the National Flag
The journey of drone-based postal delivery in the state kicked off with a remarkable trial when the national tricolor was successfully transported via drone from the main post office in Mandi to the Rehardhar branch post office. Encouraged by this success, officials announced plans to scale up operations significantly.
