The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has implemented stringent 'Anti-Discrimination Guidelines' for students, faculty, and staff to curb any form of direct or indirect bias on campus. Under these new guidelines, asking any student about their birth category, admission category, or entrance exam rank has been strictly prohibited. This landmark step aims to foster a more inclusive and psychologically safe environment within the institution.
Asking Ranks and Categories Deemed Inappropriate
According to the updated rules, inquiring about a fellow student's birth or admission category is considered inappropriate as it can unintentionally create prejudice. The official communication clarifies that no individual—whether student, staff, or faculty—is allowed to ask students for their JEE (Advanced) rank, GATE score, or any related details that expose their social background. The administration emphasized that even if asked out of mere curiosity, such queries leave a negative impact and will be treated as discriminatory behavior.
Total Ban on Offensive Jokes and Hate Speech on Social Media
The new directives also extend to digital interactions. Sharing or forwarding abusive, hateful, casteist, gender-biased, or religion-based jokes and messages via WhatsApp, Facebook, email, or personally has been completely banned. The institution warned that such actions would be classified as harassment or bullying, attracting strict disciplinary action against violators.
Background of Protests and Campus Tensions
This major policy shift comes in the wake of a student's tragic demise and subsequent protests on campus, which brought issues of institutional equity and student welfare to the forefront. As student bodies and grieving families continue to demand accountability and transparent administrative procedures, these comprehensive guidelines represent a crucial effort by the administration to reform campus culture and ensure equal dignity for all students.
