Fresh Violence Erupts in Manipur: 15 Houses Burned Down and One Killed in Kamjong Firing

Fresh Violence Erupts in Manipur

The northeastern state of Manipur is once again witnessing a grim wave of violence, threatening the fragile peace that authorities and local communities had been trying to build over the past few months. Fresh clashes, arson, and gunfire have rocked the Kamjong district, leaving residents terrified and displacing numerous families who had to flee into nearby forests and military camps to save their lives.

According to reports from local law enforcement agencies, armed miscreants and suspected militants carried out a coordinated attack on a remote hilltop settlement in Kamjong. The sudden escalation has caught security forces on high alert, with joint teams of the Assam Rifles, Border Security Force (BSF), and state police rushed to the area to contain the spiraling tensions.

Fifteen Houses Torched in Chassad Village

The epicentre of the latest violence was Chassad village, where suspected militants launched an aggressive raid late Saturday night. The attackers targeted at least 15 residential buildings belonging to the Kuki community, setting them ablaze. High flames quickly consumed the wooden and thatched structures, reducing them to ashes within hours.

Terrified villagers were forced to flee their homes under the cover of darkness, seeking refuge in dense forests and nearby army camps. The displaced families, including women and children, are currently grappling with severe hardship as authorities work to establish relief camps and provide basic necessities to those affected by the destruction.

Fatalities and Injuries Reported from Firing

The arson was preceded by intense gunbattles on Saturday afternoon. Armed groups exchanged heavy gunfire in the village, resulting in the death of one Kuki citizen and serious injuries to four others, including the village headman Thangjahau Haokip. Security personnel quickly evacuated the wounded to a paramilitary medical facility, where one critically injured individual succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

In a separate incident within the same district headquarters, three individuals belonging to the Tangkhul Naga community sustained bullet injuries during clashes between rival armed factions. The multi-ethnic dimension of these ongoing skirmishes has added to the complexity of the security challenge in the region.

Administration Steps Up Security Measures

In response to the deteriorating law and order situation, the Manipur administration has reinforced security across sensitive pockets of Kamjong. Top officials have directed security forces to maintain 24-hour vigilance, protect civilian lives, and track down perpetrators behind the arson and killings. Meanwhile, civil society organizations have strongly condemned the attacks, urging both state and central governments to deploy additional forces and restore immediate normalcy to the troubled hills.
