Tragedy Strikes Kolkata During Saptami Festivities
Celebrations turned into mourning in West Bengal's capital as a devastating stampede broke out at the renowned Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata on Saturday evening. An overwhelming surge of devotees gathered to catch a glimpse of the deity during Saptami, leading to uncontrollable crowds.
According to preliminary reports, the chaos erupted around 7:40 PM when a sudden spell of rain triggered frantic pushing and shoving among visitors attempting to enter and exit the marquee. The overwhelming pressure caused a portion of the pandal's structure to collapse, sparking panic and a severe stampede.
The tragic incident claimed the lives of 17 people, including women and children, while over 40 others sustained critical injuries. Emergency services swiftly mobilized to rescue the victims and transport them to the Calcutta Medical College Hospital (MCH) for urgent medical care.
Concerns Raised Over Unique 360-Degree Design and Crowd Management
The 91-year-old Chorbagan puja committee had conceptualized this year's pandal around a unique 'beyond sound' spiritual theme. The layout featured an elevated circular corridor requiring visitors to navigate a 360-degree path to exit the premises.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that this narrow, winding corridor became a major bottleneck when thousands of visitors accumulated simultaneously. Combined with the sudden downpour outside, the bottleneck triggered severe suffocation and panic, causing several attendees to lose consciousness and collapse under the surging crowd.
Administration and State Leadership Respond Swiftly
Senior police officials, fire brigades, disaster management groups (DMG), and medical teams rushed to the site immediately following the alert. Rescue operations were expedited to clear the area and transfer the injured to medical facilities.
Top state officials and ministers visited the injured at the hospital to oversee treatment procedures. Authorities have temporarily shut down the puja pandal to the public and summoned organizers to the police station for questioning regarding safety compliance and crowd control measures.
Toll-Free Helpline Established for Affected Families
To assist distressed relatives and provide accurate updates, the West Bengal government has activated a dedicated toll-free helpline number: 18003455678. Investigations into the exact sequence of events leading to the structural failure and subsequent stampede are currently underway.
