During the festive season when the demand for food items peaks, a shocking case of adulteration has come to light. Municipal and food safety authorities recently raided an illegal manufacturing unit and seized nearly 2,000 kilograms of suspicious ketchup being produced entirely without tomatoes. The operation exposed a dangerous racket where cheap ingredients were blended to mimic popular food products.
How the Illegal Racket Was Uncovered
The investigation began when officials stumbled upon a suspicious container of ketchup from a local vendor. Acting on the address printed on the container, the inspection team initially found the premises deserted. However, persistent intelligence and tracking eventually led them to the actual operating unit after nearly three months of surveillance. Authorities revealed that the operators had been running this clandestine business for the past five to six months.
Potato Powder, Starch, and Dangerous Chemicals Used
According to food safety officials, the fake ketchup contained zero tomatoes. Instead, the concoction was prepared using potato powder, industrial starch, water, artificial coloring, acetic acid, and other harmful chemicals. Marketed under the brand name 'Snake Touchup', the mixture was packed in massive five-kilogram containers and sold for a meager 105 rupees per box, making it attractive to unsuspecting vendors and local eateries.
Health Risks Leading to Severe Diseases
Health experts have warned that consuming such unregulated and chemical-laden products poses severe risks to human health, potentially causing gastrointestinal disorders, ulcers, and long-term risks like cancer. Samples of the seized ketchup have been sent to a laboratory for detailed analysis, and strict legal action will be initiated against the culprits once the reports are finalized.
