Recently, a session at the 'India Today Conclave Mumbai' discussed the rising concerns surrounding dowry deaths, domestic violence, and allegations of false cases in marriages amid changing social circumstances. The discussion highlighted how matrimonial vows are, in some cases, turning fatal for both men and women.
The Changing Dynamics of Marriage and Law
The panel featured prominent lawyer and social activist Flavia Agnes, men's rights documentary filmmaker Deepika Narayan Bharadwaj, and psychiatrist, sexologist, and couples therapist Dr. Pawan Sonar. The speakers emphasized how the institution of marriage is facing unprecedented stress on multiple fronts in modern times.
Flavia Agnes pointed out that the term 'dowry death' does not always capture the entire context, as women face violence leading to suicide or murder under severe distress. Deepika Narayan Bharadwaj argued that human life should not be viewed solely through a gendered lens and highlighted concerns regarding the misuse of legal provisions in matrimonial disputes.
Communication and Mental Health in Relationships
Dr. Pawan Sonar noted that couples often seek therapy when the scope to save a relationship is nearly exhausted. Factors such as a lack of sex education, urbanization, the decline of joint families, and women's financial independence are reshaping modern marriages, requiring greater patience and open communication among younger generations.
