A major safety lapse during a political rally in Uttar Pradesh turned a celebratory event into a harrowing experience, leaving a ruling party lawmaker with severe burn injuries. The incident occurred during a torch rally organized to mark years of governance, highlighting the potential dangers of using volatile chemical-laced torches in crowded public demonstrations.
Sudden Flare-Up During The Torch Rally
According to reports, party workers had gathered for a 'Seva Sankalp Abhiyan' torch procession following a live telecast event. As soon as the march commenced, the excessive and volatile chemical filled inside the torch triggered a sudden, uncontrollable flare-up. BJP MLA Brijesh Rawat, representing the Mohan assembly constituency, was caught directly in the flames, resulting in serious burns on both of his hands.
State Minister for Higher Education Rajni Tiwari, who was standing close by, narrowly escaped unhurt. However, a local party worker named Milan Pandey also sustained injuries in the mishap. The sudden burst of fire caused immediate panic and chaos among the gathered crowd and party members.
Hospital Treatment And Recovery
Immediately following the incident, party members rushed the injured legislator and the worker to the district hospital. A team of medical professionals administered immediate first aid and treatment. Senior party leaders, including the district panchayat president and district unit chief, rushed to the hospital to check on his condition.
After receiving treatment, MLA Brijesh Rawat stated that the excessive chemicals packed inside the torch caused the sudden explosion-like flare-up, which peeled the skin off his hands. After being administered necessary injections and medication, the lawmaker was discharged to recover at home. The incident has sparked a debate regarding safety protocols during public processions.
