8-Year-Old Boy Returns Home After 23 Months in ICU; Father Left Taxi Driving to Care for Him

For 23 months, a hospital room was the entire world for an 8-year-old boy. When preparations were finally made to discharge him from that very room, doctors and nurses were overcome with emotion. A cake was placed on one side and sweets on the other. The medical staff stood around the child while tears of relief welled up in his mother's eyes.

A 2-Year Battle Inside the PICU

Admitted on October 5 in an unconscious state with high fever and paralyzed limbs, the child fought for his life in the Pediatric ICU for nearly two years, requiring continuous ventilator and oxygen support. Throughout this grueling period, the mother never left her son's bedside, while the father, a taxi driver, gave up his work to stay at the hospital. The medical facility transformed into a second home for the grief-stricken yet hopeful family.

Doctors and Nurses Became Family

Spending 23 months with a patient creates deep emotional bonds. The nursing staff noted that the child felt less like a patient and more like a family member. From celebrating his birthdays inside the ward to bringing home-cooked meals, the staff ensured the child experienced moments of childhood despite the sterile hospital walls.

Gratitude Towards the Medical Team

The boy's father, Sombir Dahiya, expressed heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Kundan Mittal and his team, stating that treatment in a private hospital would have financially devastated them. Vice-Chancellor Dr. H.K. Agarwal also visited to encourage the staff, noting that seeing a critically ill patient recover is the ultimate satisfaction for any medical professional.
