Reaching the picturesque landscapes of Ladakh has become significantly easier as major infrastructure upgrades take shape. Nestled among high mountains, snowy passes, and challenging terrains, the region is witnessing a massive boost in road connectivity, power supply, air transport, and water conservation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and dedicated five major development projects worth approximately ₹3,350 crore via video conferencing, promising immense benefits for both locals and tourists.
Among these projects, the 298-kilometer-long Nimmu-Padum-Darcha road stands out as a game-changer. Built by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), this vital stretch connects Nimmu in Leh to Darcha in Himachal Pradesh through the rugged Zanskar Valley. It offers travelers a crucial third alternative route alongside the traditional Srinagar-Leh and Manali-Leh highways. Traversing high-altitude regions and the formidable Shinkun La pass, this scenic route is set to become a favorite among adventure enthusiasts, bikers, and road trip lovers.
Enhanced Air Connectivity and Energy Infrastructure
To further strengthen travel infrastructure, the Prime Minister inaugurated a new passenger terminal building at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh, constructed at a cost of around ₹640 crore. Spread across 23,800 square meters, the modern terminal is designed to handle up to 3.5 million passengers annually. Built with geothermal energy integration, it prioritizes energy efficiency and carbon footprint reduction. Additionally, to fortify the regional power grid, the 9 MW Hanu small hydroelectric project and associated transmission lines were officially commissioned.
Preserving Heritage and Water Security
Beyond geographical connectivity, significant emphasis has been placed on safeguarding Ladakh's rich cultural heritage. India’s first petroglyph conservation park was inaugurated at the Indus Ghat in Leh to protect ancient rock carvings. Furthermore, under 'Project Him Sarovar', 40 water bodies have been developed across 40 villages to address regional water scarcity and promote ecological sustainability, fostering better prospects for local agriculture and everyday life.
