TEHRAN/ISFAHAN — Another grim picture of human rights violations has emerged from inside Iran's prisons, where a young detained protester married his fiancée over the phone just a day before being executed by authorities. Twenty-five-year-old Alireza Sepahi from Isfahan was imprisoned for participating in anti-government protests. Facing imminent execution, he requested permission to speak with his fiancée, during which they solemnized their marriage over a monitored phone call.
According to media reports, the phone call was an emotional moment for the family, who held onto a fragile hope for clemency. However, just twenty-four hours after the telephonic wedding, prison authorities informed the family that the execution had been carried out. Human rights organizations have strongly condemned the speed and lack of due process in these executions, pointing out that Iran continues to crush dissent brutally amidst ongoing nationwide unrest.
