Tragic Accident Claims 12 Lives Near Gwalior Temple
In a devastating incident in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, an out-of-control truck mowed down a large group of pilgrims heading towards the Sheetla Mata Temple during the auspicious festival of Navratri. The tragic mishap has left the entire region in deep shock and mourning. According to official reports, 12 people lost their lives on the spot, while numerous others sustained severe injuries. The victims include women and elderly individuals who were walking towards the temple with immense devotion.
Local administration and police forces rushed to the scene immediately after the incident was reported. Rescue operations were launched swiftly in the dead of night to pull out victims trapped under the debris and the vehicle. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, where medical teams are providing emergency treatment. This horrific accident has once again raised serious concerns regarding traffic management, heavy vehicle restrictions, and safety protocols during major religious gatherings.
Truck Breaks Through Police Barricades on Steep Slope
According to preliminary details shared by eyewitnesses and senior police officials, the incident took place around 1:30 AM on the Chhinor road. The route features a steep slope where heavy vehicle movement is strictly prohibited under normal circumstances. Anticipating heavy footfall during Navratri, police had also set up barricades and check-points to ensure public safety. However, a paddy-loaded heavy truck managed to enter the restricted zone and accelerated down the slope.
Police personnel on duty attempted to stop the vehicle, but the speeding truck smashed through the barricades. The driver reportedly lost control completely as the vehicle descended the slope. The truck ended up crushing pedestrians walking along the roadside before crashing directly into the outer wall and main entrance gate of the temple. The impact was so severe that a portion of the temple wall collapsed, trapping several devotees underneath the rubble.
Administration Steps Up Relief and Orders Thorough Probe
Taking serious note of the tragedy, Gwalior District Collector Ruchika Chauhan and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dharmveer Singh visited the site to oversee rescue operations. The administration has directed hospitals to ensure top-notch medical care for all injured individuals. CT scans and X-rays are being conducted on priority to assess internal injuries accurately and provide timely surgical interventions if required.
Authorities confirmed that two police officers on active duty were also injured while attempting to manage the situation at the checkpoint. The administration has deployed an RTO technical team to inspect the truck thoroughly to ascertain whether brake failure or any other mechanical malfunction caused the driver to lose control. A comprehensive investigation is underway to examine how the heavy vehicle bypassed security checkpoints leading to the temple path.
