Tragic Bus Accident Shakes Delhi-Mumbai Expressway
In a tragic incident reported from Rajasthan's Kota district, a speeding mini bus carrying pilgrims fell off a bridge into a deep drain along the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. The accident, which occurred early Saturday morning, resulted in the death of eight passengers on the spot, while nearly two dozen others sustained injuries of varying degrees. The victims were travelling from Madhya Pradesh to offer prayers at the revered Khatu Shyam ji temple.
According to local authorities, the ill-fated vehicle was passing through the Simlia police station area near the Karadiya toll plaza when the driver lost control. The bus breached the roadside safety barriers and plunged approximately 15 to 20 feet below into a dry and muddy drain. The impact of the crash was so severe that the front portion of the vehicle was completely mangled, trapping passengers inside the wreckage.
Challenging Rescue Operation Amid Darkness and Mud
Rescue teams, including local police and National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) personnel, rushed to the site immediately after receiving distress calls. However, darkness and difficult terrain hindered the initial rescue efforts. Local villagers also stepped forward to assist authorities in pulling victims out of the wreckage.
Emergency responders had to deploy cranes and specialized equipment to lift the mangled mini bus and extricate bodies trapped between seats. Around 17 injured passengers were rushed to the New Medical College Hospital and MBS Hospital in Kota. Medical authorities stated that several injured individuals remain in critical condition, raising concerns that the death toll could rise.
Driver Drowsiness Suspected as Primary Cause
Preliminary investigations suggest that the driver might have dozed off due to fatigue during the early morning hours, leading to the loss of vehicular control. Police officials noted that the vehicle was travelling at a high speed when it veered off the elevated expressway section. Comprehensive inquiries are currently underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the tragedy.

The incident has once again highlighted critical road safety concerns regarding driver fatigue and speed management on high-speed expressway corridors. District authorities are coordinating with officials from Madhya Pradesh to provide necessary support to the grieving families.
