Amid ongoing political tussle over the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, 272 eminent citizens and 42 former judges of the higher judiciary have released an open letter strongly backing the poll body. The letter condemns baseless allegations against constitutional institutions, calling the opposition's protests a form of political maneuvering.
Former Judges Slam Opposition Stance
The signatories warned against repeatedly questioning constitutional bodies like the Election Commission in a democracy. Retired Delhi High Court judge Justice Shiv Narayan Dhingra bluntly remarked, 'All this noise is not from voters, but from political parties that failed to win elections.'
The letter also addressed remarks made by Supreme Court judge Justice Uzzal Bhuyan, who had previously criticized the SIR process. Former Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai and other retired judges objected to active judges making public remarks on matters sub judice.
Emphasis on Credibility of Institutions
The former judges argued that weeding out ineligible voters within legal frameworks is a statutory right of the Election Commission. They warned that casting doubts without concrete evidence undermines public faith in democratic institutions.
