Online Accommodation Search for Germany Turns Costly as Student Loses Over 2 Lakhs to Cyber Fraudsters

In an alarming incident highlighting the rising wave of digital frauds, a young student looking for a place to stay abroad fell prey to sophisticated cyber criminals. What was meant to be a simple online search for accommodation in a European nation turned into a nightmare when she was duped of nearly 2.5 lakh rupees by fake landlords operating on social media.

How the Trap Was Laid on Social Media

The 21-year-old student was actively searching the internet for a one-month accommodation option in Germany. During her search, she stumbled upon a Facebook group named 'Berlin Students Accommodation'. The page appeared legitimate, offering student-friendly housing options, which prompted her to reach out for inquiries.

The fraudsters quickly established contact via the Facebook page, emails, and WhatsApp. Operating under aliases such asVivienne Rochefort, Stuart James, and Laurent Liftat, the scammers used professional communication methods to gain her trust. Stuart James used a specific email address, while Laurent contacted her using international phone numbers, giving the entire operation a veneer of authenticity.

Funds Transferred Under the Guise of Booking

Using elaborate pretexts regarding booking confirmations and advance deposits, the trio persuaded the victim to transfer money in installments. Believing she had secured a safe place to stay abroad, the student transferred a total of Rs 2.4 lakh through various payment methods.

However, the moment the final transaction went through, all communication channels went dead. The accounts became inactive, and the numbers became unreachable. Realizing she had been cheated, the student approached the local police station to file a formal complaint. Law enforcement authorities are now tracking the digital trail, including the social media pages, IP addresses, email logs, and bank accounts associated with the suspects.
