In a significant administrative shift, New Delhi's historic Jantar Mantar, which has served as the epicentre of numerous protests and social agitations for decades, has officially been stripped of its status as a designated protest site. The Ministry of Home Affairs and Delhi Police have taken this decision citing security and logistical reasons.
The Committee Recommendations
A specialized committee was previously formed to streamline public demonstrations and ensure designated spaces for civic grievances. Based on this committee's detailed recommendations, Jantar Mantar has now been completely denotified, putting an end to public gatherings and dharnas at the location.
Three New Official Protest Sites
To accommodate public demonstrations moving forward, Delhi Police has earmarked three alternative locations across the capital:
- Ramleela Maidan: A traditional venue for massive political rallies and historic public movements.
- Burari Ground: A spacious ground located in North Delhi meant to host large-scale gatherings.
- CBD Ground: Situated in East Delhi, designated to serve protestors from the eastern zones.
The authorities are expected to release a detailed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) soon to regulate events at these three approved locations.
Reactions from Activists
Jantar Mantar has long been a powerful symbol of dissent for marginalized communities, students, and activists. Reacting to the government's move, political commentators and activists have expressed sharp criticism, asserting that civic voices cannot be silenced by shifting venues and that public dissent will find new pathways.
