NHRC Takes Suo Motu Cognizance of Alleged Misconduct Against Female Journalists, Seeks Report From Delhi Police

The controversy surrounding the alleged harassment and misconduct against female journalists during a protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi has escalated, with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) stepping in. The commission has taken suo motu cognizance of the media reports and issued a formal notice to the Delhi Police Commissioner, seeking a comprehensive report within two weeks.

Background of the Protest and Allegations

On October 3, a protest was held at Jantar Mantar against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. During the coverage of this demonstration, three female journalists alleged manhandling and sexual harassment by Delhi Police personnel. One of the journalists specifically accused an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) of physical intimidation and misconduct while she was performing her journalistic duties.

Following the incident, premier media bodies including the Press Council of India and the Press Club of India expressed deep concern, demanding an immediate and transparent probe to ensure a safe working environment for media professionals. Several political leaders also raised questions regarding the conduct of law enforcement agencies.

NHRC Intervention and Police Investigation

In its official statement, the NHRC noted that if the allegations reported in the media are found to be true, it constitutes a serious violation of human rights. The commission has directed the Delhi Police Commissioner to submit a detailed status report, including the actions taken regarding the complaints, within a fortnight.

Meanwhile, Delhi Police stated that the complaints filed by the female journalists have been transferred to the Crime Branch to ensure a fair and thorough investigation. Medical examinations of the complainants were also conducted as part of the initial procedure. All eyes are now on the official response and findings that Delhi Police will submit to the human rights watchdog.
