The issue of agricultural land acquisition in Bihar is fast escalating into a major political conflict. Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait has officially called for a farmer agitation in the state, demanding that the contentious 'Bihar City Development Act' be repealed and farmers receive fair compensation for lands acquired for public projects.
Opposition to Satellite Townships and Land Acquisition
Farmers have been vehemently opposing the acquisition of fertile agricultural land for proposed satellite townships in the state. Emphasizing the need for unity, Tikait stated that farmers must fight for their legitimate rights. He noted that while the movement in Bihar is currently in its nascent stages, migrants and people working outside the state should also extend their support to the cause.
Tikait also raised serious questions over the dissolution of agricultural markets and mandis, arguing that these actions have systematically crippled the rural economy. BKU has strongly asserted that rather than grabbing agricultural land, the government should focus on grassroots rural development keeping farmers' welfare at the core.
Key Demands: MSP, Loan Waivers, and Pension
Alongside land rights, the farmers' union has put forward several critical financial demands:
- Implementation of the C2+50% formula for all crops to guarantee legal Minimum Support Price (MSP).
- A complete waiver of agricultural loans for farmers across the country.
- A monthly pension of Rs 10,000 for farmers and agricultural laborers aged 60 and above.
Furthermore, Tikait cautioned citizens against getting divided along religious lines, stressing that governance must strictly adhere to the Constitution. He also alleged that growing corporate dominance over policy-making is adversely affecting the working class. With BKU's call for a statewide movement, the land acquisition debate is bound to become a central political talking point in Bihar.
