The social alliance that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has relied on to win successive elections in Uttar Pradesh now appears to be facing a severe political crisis. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Samajwadi Party (SP) successfully dented this exact electoral equation, and the party is now preparing to repeat this strategy for the upcoming assembly polls. In response, the BJP has been attempting to recalibrate its non-Yadav OBC and non-Jatav Dalit vote banks.
Dharmendra Kashyap's Rebellious Stance and SP Switch Rumors
Following the announcement of Rajya Sabha candidates, simmering discontent within the party has finally come out into the open. Former MP and prominent OBC leader from the Rohilkhand region, Dharmendra Kashyap, is showing clear signs of parting ways with the party. His recent social media post with a 'ta-ta bye-bye' message and the removal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's photo from his bio have created massive ripples in political circles.
According to sources, Kashyap is all set to join the Samajwadi Party. Feeling sidelined after the party's electoral setbacks and the distribution of tickets to other faces, Kashyap—who was previously with the SP—is reportedly looking at a homecoming. This potential move could severely impact the Kashyap, Nishad, and Mallah vote banks spread across Rohilkhand, Awadh, and Purvanchal.
Kaushal Kishor's Displeasure Stirs the Pasi Community
On the Dalit political front, the BJP's troubles are also mounting. Prominent Dalit leader and former Union Minister Kaushal Kishor's family has expressed open discontent over the recent candidate lists. His son, who serves as the state vice-president of the BJP Scheduled Caste Morcha, posted a sharp reaction on social media, stating that one should not stay where parents are not respected.
After the Jatav community, the Pasi community constitutes the second-largest Dalit population (around 16%) in Uttar Pradesh, holding significant sway in the Awadh and Bundelkhand regions. The displeasure shown by Kaushal Kishor's family has raised serious concerns for the BJP as opposition parties aggressively court the community.
A Major Challenge to BJP's Social Engineering
This growing dissent among established leaders right before the upcoming assembly elections could deal a major blow to the BJP's core strategy. If the party leadership fails to pacify these veteran leaders in time, the splintering of the Kashyap and Pasi vote banks could prove detrimental in the electoral battlegrounds.
