A high-profile matrimonial dispute has surfaced in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, where a Thai national has accused a local tannery businessman, Mohammad Irfan, of fraud, forced religious conversion, and financial cheating. The police have registered a case and arrested the accused, while his family has strongly refuted the allegations.
How the Relationship Began and Escalated
The complainant, Upsorn, told police that she owns a restaurant business in Thailand. Irfan frequently visited the country for business purposes, during which they met through social media and developed a relationship. According to Upsorn, they were in contact for four years before getting married two years ago according to Thai traditions.
Upsorn alleged that she spent approximately ₹55 lakhs to gift two high-end sports bikes (costing around ₹21 lakh and ₹34 lakh respectively) to Irfan on his birthdays. To fund these expensive gifts, she claimed she had to mortgage her restaurant and borrow money from relatives.
Allegations of Forced Conversion and Fraud
The situation turned sour when Upsorn came to India to live with Irfan. She claimed that he demanded she convert to Islam and wear a burqa to live with him in India. When she refused and demanded her money back, Irfan allegedly cut off all contact.
Upon arriving at his residence in Kanpur, Upsorn discovered that Irfan was already married with three children. Following a confrontation, she approached the police with documents, photographs, and wedding rings.
Mother's Defense: 'He Is Being Blackmailed'
Following Irfan's arrest, his mother defended her son, claiming that the Thai woman was using a child and financial disputes to blackmail him. She stated that the bikes were bought from his own earnings and that her son was under severe mental stress due to ongoing harassment.
Police officials have confirmed that a case has been registered under relevant sections including cheating, forced religious conversion, and assault, and further investigation is underway.
