Farming has always been a game of extreme uncertainties, where hard work does not always guarantee fair returns. In Uttar Pradesh, potato cultivators are currently facing a severe economic crisis as market prices have plummeted drastically. Having stored their produce in cold storages in anticipation of better rates, farmers are now finding it financially unviable to retrieve their crops due to exorbitant storage rentals and low market demand.
Typically, farmers harvest potatoes in March and store them in cold storages hoping for profitable rates in subsequent months. However, prevailing market prices have crashed to around Rs 10 per kg, making it difficult for growers to even recover their basic input costs. In districts like Etawah and Bijnor, cold storages remain packed with thousands of metric tons of unsold stock as the cost of retrieval and transportation far exceeds the market value of the produce.
Government Intervention Brings Hope
To alleviate the distress of potato growers, the Uttar Pradesh government has stepped in with a dedicated financial relief package. Under this initiative, eligible farmers will receive a direct subsidy of up to Rs 20,000 to help cover the expenses incurred in extracting their produce from cold storages. This crucial monetary support aims to ease the severe financial burden weighing down rural households.
Farmers who wish to avail themselves of this benefit can apply online through the official Uttar Pradesh Horticulture Department portal at potato.uphorticulture.in. Agricultural authorities have urged cultivators to complete their documentation and registration promptly to ensure timely disbursement of funds.
