Joy Turns Into Mourning on Maha Saptami
Festive celebrations in Kolkata turned into profound grief on Maha Saptami as a devastating stampede broke out at the famous Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in the northern part of the city. Thousands of devotees had gathered to catch a glimpse of the deity when a sudden spell of heavy rain lashed the area. In an attempt to find shelter, a massive crowd rushed toward the pandal premises simultaneously, triggering a chaotic rush that quickly went out of control.
Eyewitnesses recounted harrowing scenes as people were knocked to the ground and trampled in the surge. The local administration and emergency response teams rushed to the spot, but by then, 17 people had lost their lives, and nearly 40 others sustained critical injuries. The injured were swiftly transported to nearby hospitals, where medical staff are working round the clock to stabilize their condition.
Crowd Management and Rain Chaos Blamed
The Chorbagan pandal is one of the most prominent and visited Puja venues in Kolkata. As heavy rains started around late evening, thousands of people standing outdoors scrambled for cover. Due to narrow entry and exit points, the sudden surge created immense pressure at the gates. Rumors or confusion amid the noise further worsened the situation, leading to panic and a massive surge that proved fatal for many unsuspecting devotees.
"This is an unprecedented and deeply painful tragedy. Our immediate focus is on providing top-tier medical care to all the injured and supporting the grieving families through this dark hour."— Senior State Government Official
Following the disaster, the state administration swung into action, canceling all scheduled VIP events and programs. Chief Ministers and senior cabinet ministers visited the hospitals to oversee rescue operations and meet the survivors. Authorities have also urged other Puja committees across the city to review their crowd control measures and ensure foolproof safety to prevent any recurrence of such an unfortunate incident.
