Mysterious Microorganisms Living on Human Skin Become Active at Night

Our faces are home to countless microscopic organisms that we can never see with the naked eye. These tiny creatures, living around hair follicles and eyelashes, are called Demodex Mites. They are present on the skin of most adults, but they usually do not cause any trouble. They are so minuscule that a microscope is required to observe them.

Why Demodex Mites Become More Active at Night

According to the Cleveland Clinic, Demodex Mites measure about 0.15 to 0.4 millimeters in length. They feed on natural skin oils and debris accumulated in hair follicles, and are commonly found around the face, nose, eyebrows, and eyelashes. One of their unique traits is heightened activity during the night. After dark, they emerge from the hair follicles onto the skin surface to mate and then return to their dwelling spots. However, their mere presence on the skin is not a sign of any disease.

Most people remain completely unaware that these creatures live on their skin, and they coexist peacefully without causing damage. However, an abnormal surge in their population can trigger skin issues known as demodicosis. This can manifest as facial redness, itching, burning sensations, and minor bumps. If their numbers increase near the eyelids, it may lead to inflammation, itching, and crusting around the lashes. Individuals with weakened immune systems may have a higher susceptibility to overgrowth.

How to Maintain Healthy Skin Care Habits

Since Demodex Mites naturally inhabit human skin, trying to eradicate them entirely is unnecessary. Maintaining a good skincare routine, such as cleansing the face with a mild cleanser and removing all makeup before going to bed, is sufficient. If persistent itching, redness, or eye irritation occurs, consulting a dermatologist or eye specialist is strongly recommended rather than applying harsh chemical treatments without medical guidance.
