The Terrifying Moments Inside the Cockpit
Aviation history is filled with moments where pilot resilience saves hundreds of lives. A similar harrowing incident occurred aboard a Flydubai flight that shook the global aviation sector. Weeks after the harrowing event, Indian Captain Smit Machhar has opened up about the terrifying moments when he believed he would not survive a sudden attack by a co-pilot inside the cockpit.
The gravity of the incident was such that the aircraft plunged nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds, creating immense panic on board. Captain Machhar sustained serious injuries during the assault and is currently recovering in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Reflecting on the traumatic experience in a recent media interaction, he detailed the intense struggle he faced to regain control and protect the passengers.
'I Cannot Die Like This', The Moment of Resolve
Recalling the exact moments when he feared for his life, Captain Machhar shared a deeply moving account of his internal resolve. Lying face down on the cockpit floor and severely injured, he knew that immediate action was vital before it was too late to save the flight.
'I am trying to recover from this incident now, but yes, there was a moment when I realized and told myself—Smit, do something. You cannot die like this,' Machhar recounted. His words reflect the extraordinary mental toughness required to handle such an unprecedented mid-air crisis.
Co-Pilot's Bravery and Saving 174 Lives
Following the sudden assault, another colleague in the flight deck took charge of the aircraft, executing a vital role in preventing a catastrophic crash. Machhar praised his fellow crew member for stepping in immediately while he was incapacitated on the floor, calling his bravery unforgettable.
The incident took place on September 30 aboard Flydubai flight FZ-1073, traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv with 174 passengers on board. Allegations point to the Omani co-pilot, Hammam al-Hammami, attempting to crash the plane. Thanks to timely intervention by other crew members and passengers who rushed into the flight deck, the attacker was subdued.
Safe Landing and International Recognition
Following initial medical aid administered on board, the alternate crew successfully diverted and landed the aircraft safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Captain Machhar's exemplary courage earned him widespread international praise, including a personal letter of appreciation from Israeli President Isaac Herzog for averting a major tragedy.
