Ahead of Durga Puja, the vibrant city of Kolkata has transformed completely, with its flyovers and major streets turning into a canvas of festive decorations. Prominent flyovers like Gariahat and Chingrighata are painted in bright hues of orange, pink, and yellow, complemented by traditional Bengali 'Alpana' designs that add a distinct charm to the urban landscape.
Amidst these grand preparations, a remarkable and eco-friendly art installation of Goddess Durga has captured widespread attention. Standing at 5.5 feet tall, the idol is not made of traditional clay or straw, but has been painstakingly crafted using approximately 13,000 recycled plastic pens and an equal number of refills. From a distance, it resembles a traditional sculpture, but a closer look reveals its intricate pen-based architecture.
Blending Art, Tradition, and Recycling
This innovative project was introduced by the popular writing instrument brand 'Pentonic', owned by Linc Limited. According to artist Chandra Nath Saha, the core idea behind the installation was to view an everyday ordinary object through a fresh, artistic lens. While pens are traditionally meant for writing, grouping thousands of them together demonstrates how waste materials can be transformed into stunning works of art while promoting sustainability.
A City Transformed Into a Canvas
The festive fervour has turned Kolkata's streets into colorful corridors, heavily documented across social media platforms. Videos showcasing the color-blocked roads and brilliant decorations are going viral, winning praise from netizens across the country for their unique artistic expression.
