US Lawmaker Pramila Jayapal Raises Concerns Over SIR in India, Advocates for Fair Elections

The issue of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in India and the alleged removal of voter names has now gained international attention. Indian-origin US Representative Pramila Jayapal has expressed deep concern over reports of millions of voters being removed from draft voter lists, advocating for the right to fair elections while supporting peaceful demonstrations.

Statement on Democratic Rights

Writing on the social media platform X, Democratic lawmaker Jayapal stated, "I am deeply concerned by the reported removal of millions of names from voter lists in India. I support the non-violent movements being organized to resist efforts against the democratic system in India. At such times, peaceful civic action is vital to protect fundamental rights."

Jayapal's remarks have sparked fresh debates regarding voting rights and democratic participation, drawing attention from various international observers concerned about electoral integrity.

Election Commission's Clarification

Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India has consistently rejected allegations of arbitrary removals. According to data shared by the commission, the revision phases across various states involved scrutiny under standardized regulatory frameworks.

The poll panel has clarified that if any genuine voter's name has been inadvertently omitted during the SIR process, they can easily get their name re-added through the prescribed claims and objections process using Form 6. Despite these clarifications, the debate surrounding electoral roll revisions continues to attract widespread attention.
