Supreme Court Slams Authorities Over Mathura Road Safety
The Supreme Court of India has taken a strong stance regarding pedestrian safety near the Delhi High Court and National Zoological Park on Mathura Road. During the hearing, a bench comprising Justices J.B. Pardiwala and K.V. Viswanathan expressed deep dissatisfaction over the delay in fixing dangerous pedestrian crossings used daily by thousands of lawyers, litigants, and children.
The bench criticized administrative delays, stating that excuses and committee formations will no longer be tolerated. The court emphasized that immediate steps must be taken to ensure the safety of citizens navigating this busy stretch of the national capital.
Judges Threaten Protest at High Court Gate
In a sharp yet firm warning to Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Vikramjit Banerjee, the judges remarked that if the necessary road safety work is not completed before the next hearing, both judges will sit on a dharna outside the main gate of the Delhi High Court and will not go home until the work is finished.
"If you do not complete this work before the next date, both of us will reach the main gate of the Delhi High Court and will not go home until you finish it. This is certain." — Supreme Court Bench
Strict Deadline Fixed for November 25
The apex court has set a strict deadline of November 25 for the completion of all safety measures, including proper traffic signals, rumble strips, and speed-control mechanisms. Amicus Curiae Gaurav Agarwal pointed out previous shortcomings, prompting the court to demand absolute accountability from the administration as the case continues to the next hearing date.
