In a remarkable display of inter-state police coordination, Maharashtra Cyber's real-time financial tracking helped rescue an elderly woman in New Delhi who was trapped in a sophisticated digital arrest scam. The victim had already transferred a substantial amount to fraudsters before authorities intervened.
Uncovering the Trail of Fraud
The operation began while Maharashtra Cyber was analyzing financial transactions tied to an ongoing Rs 3 crore digital arrest fraud case. Technical teams were examining the movement of defrauded funds through a Layer-1 mule account when they noticed a fresh credit of Rs 14 lakh made via RTGS through UCO Bank from an individual.
Suspecting that the sender might be another victim targeted by the same crime syndicate, investigators quickly traced the transaction backwards. KYC details obtained from the bank revealed that the sender was an elderly woman residing in New Delhi. Analysis indicated she was undergoing a live digital arrest ordeal and was on the verge of transferring more money.
Swift Action by Delhi Police
Recognizing the urgency, Maharashtra Cyber shared the intelligence with Delhi Police on October 13. Acting swiftly, local police teams reached out to the woman and successfully rescued her from the psychological trap of the fraudsters. Although she had already lost approximately Rs 27 lakh, the timely intervention safeguarded the rest of her savings.
Authorities have reiterated that 'digital arrest' is entirely illegal and does not exist under Indian law. Law enforcement agencies never demand money over video calls. Citizens have been urged to report any such suspicious activities immediately to the National Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930.
