Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Friday stated that if the Supreme Court feels he made any inappropriate remarks as a petitioner, there is no harm in apologizing to the institution that safeguards the Indian Constitution. The remarks came shortly after the Supreme Court issued a contempt notice to Raut and journalist Nikhil Wage.
Interacting with reporters, Raut clarified that neither he nor his party ever intended to show disrespect or commit contempt of the apex court. "If the Supreme Court feels that Sanjay Raut has made an inappropriate statement, there is no harm in apologizing to the Supreme Court which protects the Constitution of India," he said.
Supreme Court Observations on Judiciary
The development follows strong remarks made by the Supreme Court during a hearing, where the bench asserted that no one can intimidate the judiciary. The Chief Justice noted that while people often criticize the court, they ultimately turn to it when their rights are threatened. The bench added that they are fully aware of statements being made outside and inside courtrooms.
While discussions floated over whom the remarks were directed at, Raut noted that the Supreme Court did not explicitly name anyone, but reiterated his willingness to offer an apology if necessary.
Plea for Justice on Party Symbol Dispute
Highlighting the ongoing legal battle regarding the original name and 'bow and arrow' symbol of Shiv Sena following the 2022 political crisis in Maharashtra, Raut expressed anguish over the delays.
"You must understand our pain. It has been four and a half years. We are fighting a legal battle over the party name and symbol. Four Chief Justices have changed during the hearings. Give us justice; that is our only demand," Raut added.
