In a shocking incident in Maharashtra's Thane district, social activist Harish Gajwani—known for raising his voice against illegal gutkha trade and gambling dens—was shot dead in broad daylight. Police authorities confirmed that within 12 hours of the murder, three suspects were apprehended.
Old Rivalry and Police Investigation
Initial investigations point towards a past enmity between the victim and the accused. Among those arrested is Avinash Naidu. The local police station has registered a case under relevant sections of the IPC and the Arms Act, initiating a thorough probe into the conspiracy.
The assailants had targeted Gajwani near the railway station area on a Wednesday night, shooting him twice in the head. CCTV footage from near the crime scene showed a suspect moving around with a sharp weapon, indicating meticulous planning behind the execution.
Prior Threats Highlighted on Social Media
The 50-year-old activist had earlier on September 27 posted on social media expressing grave danger to his life. He had named certain senior police officials and accused them of shielding illegal businesses, while tagging top state dignitaries. Law enforcement agencies are now probing all angles, including his past criminal records and ongoing local disputes.
