Political and administrative tensions have escalated in the national capital ahead of a proposed 'Tiranga Yatra' directed against the Chief Election Commissioner. Right before the scheduled protest at Connaught Place's Central Park, a Delhi Police team arrived at the residence where 'Citizens for Justice and Peace' (CJP) founder Abhijit Dipke was staying, serving him a formal notice under the Delhi Police Act.

Background Of The March And Police Action

The controversy stems from CJP's protests over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and actions against CEC Gyanesh Kumar. Earlier, CJP workers Saurabh Das and Ashutosh Ranka were detained and subsequently arrested near Jantar Mantar while carrying the national flag, and remain in judicial custody at Tihar Jail. In protest against these arrests, Dipke had announced a march at Central Park.

Prior to the police visit, Dipke had alleged that unmarked vehicles were trailing him and Intelligence Bureau personnel were monitoring his home, expressing apprehension of a preemptive police detention. Meanwhile, Delhi Police invoked Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), prohibiting unlawful assemblies in and around Connaught Place, and urged citizens to stay away from the march.

Traders Association Raises Concerns

The New Delhi Traders Association (NDTA) has strongly questioned the choice of venue for the protest. Highlighting that Connaught Place is a central business and commercial market area rather than a designated protest site, NDTA stressed that while everyone has the right to protest, traders have an equal right to livelihoods. They noted that disruptions during the festive season harm public convenience, business activity, and government revenues.
