Former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor and Congress MP from Manipur, Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, has officially responded to the notice issued by the Delhi Police in connection with sexual harassment allegations against him.
Response to Delhi Police and Upcoming Investigation
According to reports, the MP sent his reply via email, stating that he will join the police investigation by October 16. The Delhi Police had earlier issued a notice, and officers from the Vasant Kunj North police station pasted it outside his official residence in Delhi.
Before leaving for Delhi from Imphal, Akoijam expressed confidence in the judicial process, stating, "Don't worry, justice will be done. This is the beginning of ending the injustices that my people have faced for decades." He maintained that he would fight against any form of unfair treatment.
Background of the Allegations and JNU Dismissal
Akoijam was a professor at JNU's Centre for the Study of Social Systems. In May, at least 11 female students lodged complaints accusing him of sexual harassment and making inappropriate remarks during meetings at his campus residence.
Following an internal inquiry, the university dismissed him with immediate effect on October 9. An FIR was subsequently registered based on a complaint by JNU's Chief Security Officer. While Akoijam has consistently denied all allegations, the legal and investigative proceedings remain ongoing.
