End of an Era for Jantar Mantar? Ministry Panel Recommends Removing Historic Site from Protest Venues

When citizens, farmers, or students wanted their voices heard by the government in Delhi, Jantar Mantar was traditionally the go-to destination. Located just a short distance from Parliament, it served as the heartbeat of public agitation for decades. However, this historic chapter may soon come to an end. A Home Ministry committee has recommended removing Jantar Mantar from the official list of protest sites, proposing three alternative locations instead: Ramlila Maidan, Burari Ground, and CBD Ground in East Delhi.

The Student Protest Legacy of Jantar Mantar

Students have played a pivotal role in shaping Jantar Mantar's identity as a protest hub. Around 1993, demonstrations by the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) gave this location prominence. Over the last 33 years, it has witnessed monumental movements, including Anna Hazare's Jan Lokpal agitation and widespread protests demanding justice in the Nirbhaya case. Prior to Jantar Mantar, Boat Club was the primary site for public demonstrations until massive farmer rallies in 1988 led authorities to relocate protest hubs away from the immediate vicinity of Parliament.

Challenges with the Proposed Alternative Sites

While Ramlila Maidan carries a rich historical legacy of anti-establishment movements, the other two proposed locations—Burari Ground and CBD Ground—are situated considerable distances away from Parliament House (roughly 14 to 21 kilometers). Critics and activists are questioning whether shifting protests to such distant peripheries will dilute the impact of public movements and reduce their visibility to lawmakers.
